1. Stress elevates cortisol ↓ 2. High cortisol increases blood sugar (cortisol’s job is to mobilize glucose for “fight or flight”) ↓ 3. High blood sugar triggers insulin release ↓ 4. High insulin worsens insulin resistance (your cells become less responsive) ↓ 5. Insulin resistance increases androgen production (hello, acne, hair loss, unwanted hair growth) ↓ 6. Androgens disrupt ovulation and menstrual cycles ↓ 7. Symptoms cause stress and anxiety ↓ And the cycle repeats, getting worse over time
Research shows that high insulin directly inhibits the hepatic production of SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), which means more free testosterone circulating in your bloodstream, worsening PCOS symptoms.
The Metabolic Toll
The numbers are sobering. Women with PCOS, partly due to this stress-cortisol-insulin connection, show:
20.9% higher BMI on average
144.9% increase in visceral fat (the dangerous kind around organs)
7.27% higher waist-to-hip ratio
9.37% increase in heart rate
