Three papers this cycle, and they share a theme I did not plan but cannot ignore: the timing of menopause carries information - about your metabolism, your thyroid, your arteries - but not always the information we assumed. Here's what the new literature says.
1. Late menopause may carry a metabolic bill
What it studied: A BMC Medicine analysis of 6,298 postmenopausal women from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (followed 2011-2018) asked whether age at menopause predicts developing multiple metabolic disorders at once - combinations of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.
What it found: Women whose periods stopped after age 55 had a 48% higher risk of metabolic multimorbidity than women in the normal window (45-55), with risk rising about 2% for each additional year of menopause age. The link was strongest for diabetes (49% higher risk). Early menopause, notably, showed no association with this outcome.
My read: We've long treated later menopause as mostly good news - more estrogen, stronger bones, healthier vessels. This study complicates that in a useful way. Prolonged estrogen exposure also means prolonged influence on fat distribution and insulin sensitivity. The honest caveats: observational data, self-reported menopause age, a single Chinese cohort, and relatively short follow-up. The practical takeaway costs nothing: if your menopause came late, your metabolic screening - glucose, blood pressure, lipids - deserves extra diligence in the years after. If it came early, this particular study is not your worry; yours is bone and brain, as we covered last week.

2. Hormone therapy history and thyroid disorders: a signal, not a verdict
What it studied: A BMC Endocrine Disorders cross-sectional study of 3,974 postmenopausal Korean women (national KNHANES survey) compared thyroid disorder rates between women who had ever taken hormone therapy (582 women) and those who never had.
What it found: Doctor-diagnosed thyroid disorders were more common among ever-users (10.9% vs 6.9%), and the association survived statistical adjustment (odds ratio about 1.5) and correction for multiple testing.
My read: Read this one carefully, because the headline will travel further than the evidence deserves. This is a cross-sectional, self-reported snapshot: it cannot say whether hormones preceded thyroid disease, followed it, or simply shared a doctor's office. Women with fatigue, weight change, and mood symptoms - classic thyroid complaints - often seek menopause care, so reverse causation is entirely plausible. The authors themselves say this does not justify universal thyroid screening or changing hormone therapy decisions. Where I land: if you're on or considering hormone therapy, this changes nothing by itself. If you have symptoms that could be thyroid - cold intolerance, unexplained fatigue, weight shift - test. That was good practice before this paper and it remains good practice.

3. Your arteries start stiffening long before menopause - and that changes the strategy
What it studied: A Hypertension study from the Framingham Heart Study asked whether the midlife rise in pulse pressure (the gap between your upper and lower blood pressure numbers, a marker of aortic stiffness) is tied to the timing of menopause.
What it found: The turn from falling to rising pulse pressure happens in women's late 30s - about a decade earlier than in men, and up to two decades before the final period. Menopause timing, early or late, had no influence on it. After midlife, women's pulse pressure rises faster than men's and overtakes it after 60.
My read: To quote the senior author: "to our huge surprise." The conventional story blamed menopause for midlife vascular change; this says vascular aging is already underway years before the transition begins. The clinical pearl is genuinely actionable: pulse pressure above 60 (say, 130/70) in a midlife woman is not "borderline, let's watch it" - it's a signal to track and often to treat, and wide pulse pressure responds differently to standard blood pressure drugs. As Dr. Samar El Khoudary put it in commentary: don't wait until menopause to think about your heart. This paper is the strongest argument I've seen this year for starting cardiovascular prevention in your late 30s, not your 50s.

What's trending - and where it meets the evidence
Three things circulating this week:
Congress held its first-ever hearing on menopause. Senator Gillibrand and the Senate Aging Committee put menopause on the congressional record for the first time, covering research funding gaps and care access. This is the mainstreaming moment the field has been asking for, and it matches the evidence: the science base for half the population's midlife health is genuinely underbuilt. Watch this space - hearings become funding lines.
Spain released menopause nutrition guidelines based largely on data from men, and women noticed. The backlash circulating online is justified: menopause-specific nutrition evidence is thin, and borrowing male data is exactly the shortcut that got us here. Where it meets the evidence: the honest answer is that we have solid ground for protein intake, fiber, and resistance-training support in midlife women, and much weaker ground for most menopause-branded diet products. Demand better evidence - and be suspicious of anyone selling certainty in the meantime.
The "menopause marketplace" critique continues. Following last week's Wired investigation, commentators are keeping pressure on the telehealth-and-supplements boom. My read stays the same: real medicine in the middle, hype at the edges. Hormone therapy properly prescribed is legitimate; $200-a-month bundles of unproven add-ons are not.
The bottom line
This cycle's science says: menopause timing is a clinical clue, not a destiny - late menopause calls for metabolic vigilance, and your arteries need attention years before your last period. And the hormone-thyroid headline is a reminder of how to read health news: a statistical association is a question, not an answer.
