🚩 THE 10 INSTANT RED FLAGS
If you see ANY of these in PCOS content online, proceed with extreme caution:
🚩 #1: “CURE” or “REVERSE” Language
Red Flag Phrase:
“Cure your PCOS in 30 days”
“Reverse PCOS naturally”
“The PCOS cure doctors don’t want you to know”
The Truth: PCOS is a lifelong genetic-metabolic condition. It can be managed extraordinarily well with evidence-based interventions, achieving symptom remission and reducing long-term health risks. It cannot be “cured” or “reversed.” Anyone using this language is either medically uninformed or intentionally misleading you to sell something.
🚩 #2: “Four Types of PCOS” Framework
Red Flag Phrase:
“Discover YOUR root cause type”
“Insulin-resistant PCOS vs. inflammatory PCOS vs. adrenal PCOS vs. post-pill PCOS”
“Take my quiz to find your PCOS type”
The Truth: This categorization has zero basis in peer-reviewed medical literature. The Rotterdam Criteria (the international diagnostic gold standard) identifies four clinical phenotypes based on combinations of hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovarian morphology—not “root cause types.”
The “four types” framework exists almost exclusively to funnel you into buying type-specific protocols, supplements, or coaching programs. It’s marketing architecture, not medicine.
🚩 #3: Extreme Elimination Diets as Universal Solution
Red Flag Phrase:
“Everyone with PCOS must eliminate gluten and dairy”
“Remove all grains to heal PCOS”
“PCOS requires a keto/carnivore/paleo diet”
The Truth: There is no peer-reviewed evidence supporting blanket gluten or dairy elimination for PCOS in women without celiac disease or confirmed intolerance. Extreme restriction increases risk of nutritional deficiencies, disordered eating, and psychological harm—all of which are already elevated in PCOS populations.
What works: Evidence-based blood sugar management, Mediterranean dietary patterns, adequate protein, and reducing ultra-processed foods. Not militant food fear.
🚩 #4: “Adrenal Fatigue” Diagnosis or Testing
Red Flag Phrase:
“Your PCOS is actually adrenal fatigue”
“Order my cortisol testing kit”
“Heal your adrenals to fix PCOS”
The Truth: “Adrenal fatigue” is not a recognized medical diagnosis by any major endocrine society. Cortisol does play a role in PCOS—women with PCOS have a hyperactive HPA axis—but the symptoms attributed to “adrenal fatigue” (fatigue, weight gain, brain fog) are symptoms of PCOS itself, thyroid disorders, depression, sleep apnea, and other conditions.
At-home cortisol kits sold by influencers rarely provide actionable medical information and often cost $150-300.
🚩 #5: “Detox” Products or Protocols
Red Flag Phrase:
“PCOS liver detox protocol”
“Detox tea for hormone balance”
“Cleanse your body to reset hormones”
The Truth: Your liver detoxifies your body continuously without supplements, teas, or “cleanses.” There is no evidence that detox products improve PCOS outcomes. Many contain laxatives (senna, cascara) that can cause electrolyte imbalances, or diuretics that create temporary water weight loss while doing nothing for your actual metabolism.
Save your money. Support your liver with evidence-based approaches: reduce alcohol, manage insulin resistance, eat adequate fiber, stay hydrated.
🚩 #6: “Birth Control Caused or Worsened Your PCOS”
Red Flag Phrase:
